In particular, telling stories through songs became a lot more common, and Kagerou Project is the result of Jin (じん), also known as Shizen no Teki-P (自然の敵P), bringing his own story to life through music. These programs allowed music creators to have a affordable way to give their songs vocals, and this freedom lead to a boom in creative vocaloid songs that covered all genres of music. For more detailed information, it’s probably faster to look it up yourself, but essentially Vocaloids were singing programs, voicebanks created from synthesized human voices. However I know that’s not possible for everyone, and I’d hate for anyone to be barred entry into this series because of that, so whenever possible I will provide links to places where you can read/find translations. Similarly, if you end up falling into the KagePro world as deep as I have, I also recommend buying official releases for the manga, light novels and anime (most of which have official English translations).

Although I won’t go into too much detail about each song here (that will have it’s own section), I do want to point out that the songs are absolutely amazing even if you don’t care for the story of Kagerou Project, or for the characters within the story. I first discovered KagePro alongside the release of the song “Ayano’s Theory of Happiness” in 2013. The long answer? Read this guide, because it’s essentially my needlessly long love letter to this mammoth of a series. The short answer? Because I love AyanoKagePro. It makes you wonder, “Just why is this series so popular?” It isn’t unusual for fans of a series to justify it by saying “It makes more sense if you read the original manga/light novel!”, but with Kagerou Project, even long term fans might tell you “Yep, I still don’t really get it”. It also didn’t help that Kagerou Project has always been rather complicated to follow as a story, and the anime was as confusing as you’d expect from a Kagerou Project adaptation. Granted, not all of this attention was exactly positive. Especially the anime adaptation, Mekakucity Actors, which brought with it a surge of attention for Kagerou Project when it was released in 2014.
